ABOUT US

WHO ARE WE?

Officially known as, and governed by the New Zealand Jet Boat River Racing Association, River Racing NZ has a long-standing relationship and strong partnership with Jet Boating New Zealand (JBNZ), sharing a proud history that is deeply connected to the origins of jet boating in New Zealand.

In the mid-1950s, New Zealand inventor Bill Hamilton pioneered the concept of jet boating at Irishman Creek in the Mackenzie Country, developing a way to navigate shallow rivers that would go on to become a defining part of New Zealand’s boating heritage.

Today, River Racing NZ continues that legacy by bringing the excitement, skill and challenge of jet boating to competitive river racing. Racers take on some of New Zealand’s iconic waterways, putting their boats, precision and river knowledge to the test.

River racing is more than just speed. It is a sport built on skill, teamwork, precision, courage and respect for the river. It brings together competitors, families, supporters and volunteers who share a passion for jet boating and the unique challenge of racing on New Zealand’s rivers.

With a proud history and a strong focus on the future, River Racing NZ is committed to growing the sport, supporting competitors and celebrating the people and waterways that make New Zealand river racing what it is today.

A proud Kiwi tradition. A challenging sport. Racing on the rivers we call home.
